Project

As a part of the activities performed under the Consultancy Services for Development of Dam Safety Management Plan (DSMP) and Detailed Design and Construction Supervision of Mudi Dam and Water Treatment Plant, ELC-Electroconsult S.p.A. (the Consultant) has provided training services to Blantyre Water Board (BWB) staff.

Dam Safety Training Program was delivered to technical and operational personnel of the Blantyre Water Board (BWB) in Blantyre, Malawi. The program combined classroom-based instruction, practical exercises, workshops, and interactive discussions to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of modern dam safety principles and their application to the operation and management of Mudi Dam and other BWB water infrastructure assets.

The training curriculum covered both theoretical and practical aspects of dam safety and was structured to progressively build participants’ knowledge from fundamental concepts to advanced risk management applications.

  • Fundamentals of dam safety and risk management – key principles, risk-informed decision-making, dam safety governance
  •  Hazard identification and evaluation – systematic assessment of potential hazards affecting dam infrastructure
  •  Dam stability, seepage, and internal erosion – geotechnical and hydraulic failure mechanisms
  •  Hydraulic safety and flood risk assessment – including the role of the Mudi Dam spillway in managing extreme floods
  •  Operation and maintenance – good practices for routine operation and maintenance planning
  •  Dam safety inspections – inspection procedures and surveillance activities
  •  Instrumentation and monitoring systems – piezometers, leakage monitoring, reservoir level gauges, geodetic monitoring
  •  Monitoring data interpretation – trend analysis, identification of abnormal behavior, use of data for safety decisions
  •  Advanced topics in dam monitoring – emerging technologies and modern surveillance approaches
  •  Field inspection checklist – practical, hands-on application of inspection concepts
  •  Dam break analysis – breach development, flood routing, consequence and downstream risk assessment
  •  Emergency preparedness – Emergency Preparedness Plans, response procedures, communication protocols, stakeholder coordination
  •  Potential Failure Mode Analysis (PFMA) – methodology fundamentals, identification/evaluation/prioritization of failure modes
