Home > Environment > 220-132-33 kV Transmission Lines and Submarine Cables from Tanzania to Zanzibar Islands and Mafia District

Project

The project includes three interconnections: a 220 kV line with 43.5 km submarine cable, 5.2 km underground cables, and substations from Dar Es Salaam to Unguja Island. A 132 kV line with 69.7 km submarine cable, 17 km underground cables, and substations links Tanga to Pemba Island. A 33 kV line with 65.6 km submarine cable, 6.5 km underground cables, 35 km overhead line, and substations connects Mkuranga-Kisiju to Mafia Island. The coastal areas of the project are home to delicate mangroves and coral reefs, vital for marine biodiversity. Biodiversity surveys and socio economic surveys are needed to assess impacts and protect these sensitive areas. The surveys guided efforts to minimize environmental harm.
